FEATURE PRESENTATION

Halloween approaches and it conjures up associations with the horror films of Hollywood. There was “Attack of the Killer Tomatos”, “Frankenstein”, “The Exorcist”. Think of anything Hitchcock… “Psycho”, “The Birds”, “Vertigo”. Think of a title to use as the title of your poem and write it. Or make up your own Horror film title and be inspired by it… If you dare!

ADVICE FROM A BIRD HEARD IN THE GLOAMING

    Hoo-hoo-hoo, hoo-hoo-hoo, hoo-hoo-hoo;
says the owl, if you knew, through and through,
    that you never are free,
    you’d get ready to flee
from the spooks and the gooks haunting you.

  2. Vertigo

    I spin
    round and round
    until
    I can stand no
    longer
    sink to the cushy
    grass,
    close my eyes and
    twirl
    with the cosmos

  3. Revenge of the Slugs

    Useless are we? They cackled
in voices only they could hear.
    Tired of being kicked, salted,
    and dissed, the slugs discovered
    a magic elixir. Crawling about
    the wetlands, Stanley the Smart
came upon a new wild berry
    tree. Birds, beavers, and tree
    frogs were not impressed
    with the berries. Perhaps
    their hue of puce rendered
    them unappealing.

    Many months disappeared
    down the road, while slugs
    crawled from all corners
    of concrete and dirt.
    The berry-eating fest began.
    The slugs grew larger, wider,
    and every more powerful.

    Tonight, while children
    are out collecting
    Halloween candy, the slugs
    will attack. No one
    will be spared. Everyone
will see that slugs are far
    from useless.
