WELCOME AGAIN TO THE PHOENIX RISING POETRY GUILD. We hope the experience here is a pleasant and relaxing one; a place where our hearts, and minds are set free to soar to great heights! The drafts developed here should serve you well as we polish them into precious gems of thought. I look forward to all you will present here!
***
So, to start this off, we will step right into the heart of February and explore love. I think since I began this process as we honored Dr. Martin Luther King back in January, I’d open with this quote by Dr. King which rings loudly:
“Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.”
― Martin Luther King Jr., A Testament of Hope: The Essential Writings and Speeches
Love has a power all its own. It is said “Faith can move mountains”. So too can love! It surely can move hearts. And minds. Love can make us do crazy things willingly. Apparently, the cause of love is a noble fight. It has been the fodder of poets and muses for as long as we’ve been able to put words to these emotions. There are many aspects of love that we have experienced or have put an expression to.
“Love is of all passions the strongest, for it attacks simultaneously the head, the heart and the senses.” ~Lao Tzu
We are told “love is blind”. And yet we speak of “love at first sight.”
“Sometimes the heart sees what is invisible to the eye.“ ~H. Jackson Brown, Jr.
We paint hearts blood red at Valentine’s Day; or purple to represent passion. So we accept these as the colors of love.
“The greater your capacity to love, the greater your capacity to feel the pain” ~Jennifer Aniston
And feel the pain of love, we do! The emotion of love encompasses all we feel. Feeling love is another aspect of which poets across the ages have found need to decipher. Whether laced with perfume or emitting pheromones, there is a certain scent associated with the process of love.
Of course:
“You must remember this, a kiss is still a kiss!“ ~Composer Herman Hupfeld
That tender sip of a kiss is most savored, and is the expression that seals the fact that something special is afoot… um, aheart! But, where does love start?
“Let us always meet each other with smile, for the smile is the beginning of love.” ~ Mother Teresa
So it can be asserted quite accurately then that love indeed attacks the senses.
We’ve mentioned the sight, feel, smell and taste of love. But consider these thoughts:
“Love is a friendship set to music.” ~ Joseph Campbell
“The sweetest of all sounds is that of the voice of the one we love.” ~Jean de la Bruyere
“Love is a single note sung by two hearts.” ~Some unknown poet from Buffalo
“The first duty of love is to listen.“ ~ Paul Tillich
and conversely
“True love comes quietly, without banners or flashing lights. If you hear bells… get your ears checked.” Author Erich Segal
One last quotation on love:
“Love is the poetry of the senses“ ~ Honore de Balzac
Certainly, it always comes back to poetry! That is after all, why we’re here! So, that brings us to our cause for the month: The Sound of Love.
What is the timber of a kiss? What is the sound of an embrace? What cacophony resides in a broken heart? What does that voice inside your head say when you fall in love?
Explore the SOUND of love.
We will begin here. Concentrate your poetry on this concept using free or open verse, or any form which serves this process. A love sonnet comes easily to mind. Then, in the next few weeks, we will explore the Sound of Love in different ways, not so much with form, but using the various devices we like to apply in our poetic pursuits.
Enjoy writing and reading this month. Encourage and support each other. Have fun doing it! Make the “Guild” a place where poetry (and you) arise!

A capella (Sonnetina Tre for unaccompanied love)
The breakfast table holds a simple note –
A loving introduction to my day,
It brings a smile and sets my heart afloat.
Pure unpretentious love … it’s just his way.
Adagio, the tempo of our bond
Amidst the pandemonium of life
Is restful and at ease, and goes beyond
Anticipations of this thankful wife.
Our love, in grazioso, calms my soul.
Our unassuming harmony is whole.

WHISPERS OF LOVE
Soft insinuations play within this vacuous heart.
It starts as the spark that memory allows to smolder.
A siren’s call within my head displaces dread and heartache.
Here within these gates,
amongst the marble pillars; stones and obelisks
to mark each valiant soul,
and I come to stand before her.
Sunset near breaking, taking its time
to shine upon this cold place.
Her face, behind closed eyes,
tender touches of hands so soft,
serenity’s surrogate reminding me time and again.
Calling in telepathic tones, my name in her voice,
her name in my ear. Laments of love
return in silent whispers, Hand reaching,
beseeching the spirits to rest and allow
me the same. And still I hear my name.
Whispers of love never die!

IN SILENCE
Silent and still,
hushed breathings
in the dark night.
Nightlight aglow,
The house settles,
creaks and snaps.
Leaves tapping window
soft scratches almost heard.
Suddenly stirred
a sense of security arises.
Listening in the night,
it reaches an attentive ear.
A soft giggle; the coo
of a precious dove angelic.
She settles in again to sleep.
A world of love in a baby’s peep!

LOVE SONGS
Within its lilting melody
our lonely hearts finds remedy
to fight the quiet solitude.
Its song is not meant to intrude
but comes to meet an urgent need.
Where treble clef and bass succeed
in climbing up and down the scales,
we hear the notes that love entails.
The beating of a heartbeat’s drum,
an old guitar’s romantic strum,
and whimsy from a trombone’s slide
all play along when love’s inside.
Of course, at times the sound is sharp
as cupid’s fingers miss the harp.
When what we hear is found untrue,
the key of love is b-flat blue.

The Poem in Her
Plush, the whisper of your wanting
Blush, the murmur of her sighs
Hush, though breath-soft bells are flaunting
Night-farewells on hello-skies
Slow the waves of want and worry,
Blow that beacon from the east
Oh my darling, do not hurry
Morning is a hungry beast
Break the bars of law and order
Wake the world within her touch
Make the most of love before her
Sense of Time becomes too much
Set the curtained dark a-quiver
Forget everything but Her
Let the morning rush, a river
Running wild where hours blur
Spill within her quill an ocean
Will to word, wanton whisper
Fill her fingers with emotion
Unleash the poem in Her

COMMUNICATING LOVE
Small hand pressed against mother’s lips,
feeling vibrations of a sound not heard.
A sensation undisturbed. Leaning forward
to feel those same lips against a forehead.
A kiss to send a message of love.
Tiny lips against a worried cheek
mimic, “Mmm, mmm, mmm, mmm…
His hearty giggle; her silent tear.
Mother and son as one! Love is understood.

First kiss, tentative, teasing
ears with a soft breathy sound

ascends into hard rock.

Reflecting on a few more love languages…
Play-back…
Love wakes the middle-dark
And asks mom for a drink
It spawns laughter in bright blue socks
Paired with a lace-dress, pink
It wails aloud because
Pancakes burnt while she read
It clunks upon piano keys
Or up the stairs to bed
Love shouts and yells and sings
It chatters and pretends
Love argues with her brother and
It giggles with her friends
It leaves a trail of ‘stuff’
While Mom pulls out her hair
It drops balled socks on side-tables
Or underneath her chair
Love doodles in ink-dreams
And makes mom wait…and wait
It turns the van too sharply and
It sees the post too late
Love showers far too often
Raids fridge and cookie jar
Or joins mom on the porch at night
To wish upon a star
Love needs another dollar
Love needs another hug
Love shrieks ‘the sky is falling’
Because it saw a bug
Then, love goes off to college
Mom wipes a tear because
Now, suddenly she misses the
Melody love once was

Oh, play one song, one simple tune.
Love, to your charms, I’m not immune.
Your joyful noise is such a tease,
unlocked by your piano keys.
I am that audience of one
who longs for magic to be spun.
There’s eighty-eight varieties.
Unlock each note, piano keys.
I hear the music in my head.
I know that nothing’s left unsaid,
despite the chords of congeries
unlocked by your piano keys.
Crescendo, passion, and release
not tempered by my heart’s caprice.
It’s all about those ivories,
since love unlocks what’s in the keys.

Well beyond mine…I remember looking up the words in the thesaurus.
Having the original song below it helps. 😉

Just for you at PR – mostly because they both did fall asleep at the same time (which is rare!).

This one touches my heart. You managed to capture the mind and heart of a child here.

Romeo and Julie T 2:2.2
(after William Shakespeare and Mark Knopfler, and with my sincerest apologies to both!)
A lovestruck Romeo sings the lassie a serenade
He’s been lying low with a love song that he made
He sees her lamp, steps out of the shade
Says something like
“But soft! What light through yonder window breaks?
It is the east, and Julie T is the sun.
Arise, fair sun, and kill the envious moon,
Who is already sick and pale with grief,
Oh my god, who writes this stuff?
My knnes are weak, my mouth is dry, I can’t speak!
It is my lady. Oh, it is my love.
Oh, that she knew she were!”
Julie says hey it’s Romeo
You nearly gimme me a heart attack
He’s underneath the window
she’s singing hey la my boyfriend’s back
You shouldn’t come around here singing up at people like that
Anyway what you gonna do about it?
My tongue is tied, aye my knees go weak
From the comfort of the hiding tree
With care it is I slowly sneak
And confess my love for my heart is bold
To woo, to wed, together grow old
I implore, I beg, I bend a knee
I crave the acceptance of Julie T.
I can’t do the talk like they talk on TV
And I can’t do a love song like the way it’s meant to be
I can’t do everything but I’d do anything for you
I can’t do anything except be in love with you
But her pa and mine do not set fair
Their eyes are as crossed as the swords they bear
Aye! What’s in a name? You’ve the right to ask
Yet tae give it away is a burdensome task
But as my every fibre bids me obey
I swear that name to cast away
And she swears as true to be fully mine
By dawn’s sweet light, by the night’s sweet wine
Each promising the other, their most dear to give
Thus we return to our narrative
And so a lovestruck Romeo sings the lass a serenade
Knowing full well the hand he’s played
He steps unerringly from the shade
and says something like
You and me babe how about it?

I’m going to have to reload them all! Only the last 6 months worth work – some sort of iTunes/Big Contract screw up. I may just pin them straight to the blog. BUT thanks I appreciate it! 🙂

I took a bit of a different approach with this poem, but I think it fits 🙂
From the Lost Love Playlist (a cento)
Woke up to the sound of pouring rain,
a bottle of vodka
still lodged in my head.
There’s no comfort in the truth,
full of broken thoughts,
lying naked on the floor.
What a wicked thing to do,
to make me dream of you…
