Times Square is a major commercial intersection and neighborhood in Midtown Manhattan, New York City, at the junction of Broadway and Seventh Avenue, and stretching from West 42nd to West 47th Streets. Brightly adorned with billboards and advertisements, Times Square is sometimes referred to as The Crossroads of the World, The Center of the Universe, and the heart of The Great White Way. One of the world’s busiest pedestrian intersections, it is also the hub of the Broadway Theater District and a major center of the world’s entertainment industry. Times Square is one of the world’s most visited tourist attractions, drawing an estimated fifty million visitors annually.
New Year’s Eve is one of the busiest times for many of these visits as thousands of tourists come to the Square to watch the ball drop and ring in the new year. Write a Times Square moment, or a New York City memory maker for that matter. If you can make it there…

My daughter
didn’t catch a show,
do much shopping,
or even get her picture taken
with her group
at Times Square.
She was too busy
standing in front of the webcam
waving at me
at my kitchen table
in Colorado.
Reminds me of that nursery rhyme
when the cat visited the queen
only to frighten the little mouse
under the chair.

3 O’CLOCK IN THE MORNING
This night is not silent.
Nights are never silent!
Raucous. Rambunctious.
Lights are not muted,
New York City is always bright.
And bright is very loud.
Sight and sound conjoined,
joined to be hip. Nipping
the big apple in the wee hours.

No Time
I’ve seen Times Square in movies
In pictures and on TV
But I’ve never been to New York City
‘Cause there’s no real attraction to me
If I want crowds and lights and excitement
I’ll head down Orlando way
‘Cause WDW has all that I need
It’s my most favorite getaway

Don’t exhaust the WDW poems., Earl. You may need them later (hint)!

Don’t worry, Walt, I’ve got a lot of them already in the archives.
It is truly my favorite place to vacation.

Forty-Second
Three card monte, the shell game,
and fake Rolex watches. Ready
to pack it up, relocate as soon
as the cops come.
The hookers and peepshows
were persuaded to go,
when Disney desired
a different look. In some
sinful way, I miss the old days,
like the Camel cigarette
billboard with smoke blowing
out of a man’s mouth.
With lights aglow, Broadway
is a magical place, theaters
filled with talent, audiences
applauding for more curtain calls.
You can still buy half price
tickets the day of the performance,
by waiting on line at the kiosk
and speaking quickly when your
turn comes. I have most of my
playbills in a wooden crate.
Years may change, security
heightened, but on New Year’s Eve,
people still pile in to watch
the ball drop. New Yorkers refuse
to be frightened.

Listen to the beat
hearts, breath and feet wandering
so many people
like ants traversing the streets
Creation’s design echoes here.
