PHOENIX RISING JULY P.A.D. TRAVELOG – DESTINATION: STONEHENGE

STONEHENGE

We continue in the United Kingdom for our next destination.

Stonehenge is a Pre-Historic monument located in Wiltshire, England. One of the most famous sites in the world, Stonehenge is the remains of a ring of standing stones set within earthworks. It is in the middle of the most dense complex of Neolithic and Bronze Age monuments in England, including several hundred burial mounds.

There is an aura of mystery surrounding this structure and your imagination could play a key role in your poem as to its origin, reason for existence and its purpose as you see it. Write about these monolithic legos!

  1. Big rocks and small men
    How did they
    Move one with the other
    More to the point,
    Why try?

    THE STONEHENGE CONSTRUCTION COMPANY

    Their work
    amazes me:
how could they cart them here
and align them all so smartly,
    undressed?

  3. July 3 – Stonehenge

    Searching

    The ancients
    Wandering lost
    Wondering why
    Why were they here

    Where did they originate
    Who was responsible
    For their existence
    Who, that is, or what

    Look to the Earth
    Gaze into the sky
    Something is there
    But not sure just what

    Life is a circle
    Singing stones heal
    Ground declared sacred
    Build for the gods

    A millennia invested
    No questions answered
    Stonehenge abandoned
    The ancients still lost

    The Night Shift

Midnight and the moon has lingered
low in the sky and the choir
    of misty stones whose shadows
    reveal
scurrying shapes with four tiny feet
and tails that twitch with excitement
Through all of the uncounted centuries
    Long before someone decided to
    arrange a circle of stones.

    Child’s Play

    Alviva smiled sadly
    watching baby Arleigh
    stack his building blocks.

    The time of giants
    such as herself
    was nearing the end.

    Come baby,
    it’s time to go.
    He came, smiling,

    leaving the blocks
    standing up in a ring
    some bridged across the top.

    She smiled to herself.
    What would those
    little people think?

  9. Once a Year

    Mid-summer solstice,
    sun fired through stones,
    painting structures in gold.
    On this sacred ground
    where numerous hunts
    occurred, they gathered–
    maidens in gossamer–
    dancing through columns,
    some playing flutes,
    others singing soulful
    tunes as they paid homage
    to the honorable totems.
    When daybreak dappled the skies,
    diaphanous shawls draped
the stones; the maidens were gone.

  10. BUILDING BLOCKS

    The design flow is fluid,
quite impressive, if you were a Druid.
    Ancient civilization or
    creative alien “invasion”?
    A foundation in any situation,
    but the materials are crude.
