Her Majesty’s Royal Palace and Fortress, known as the Tower of London, is a historic castle located on the north bank of the River Thames in central London. A grand palace early in its history, it served as a royal residence. As a whole, the Tower is a complex of several buildings set within two concentric rings of defensive walls and a moat. There were several phases of expansion, mainly under Kings Richard the Lionheart, Henry III, and Edward I in the 12th and 13th centuries. The general layout established by the late 13th century remains despite later activity on the site.
We begin in earnest in the Uniter Kingdom, as we visit the Tower of London. Write something on this site and an experience there. You could write from the POV of a palace guard, or a Londoner, a royal or maybe even as William the Conquerer, who had a hand in its design and construction.

I love this. For me, it recalled that most stones see peace come and go.

HER MAJESTY’S PLACE
Looking down upon my London,
I see a people proud, yet unsure.
Were there any other lineage
for this age old city, it would be
a pity. I am merely a stone edifice,
a tower tall and strong. My fortress
is their fortress although their dress
is very different. I am stone and cement.
They are “very clean”.
God save the Queen!

The idea of clean Londoners……….. (London born, me). Have you read Edward Rutherford’s London?

A reference to the “royals” presenting as “clean”. What’s a stone tower know anyway?

Ghosts
For the Motherland,
he parachuted down.
They sat him in a chair,
aimed and fired.
The chair remains.
Perhaps he sits in it today
and chats with the ghosts of
Henry VI, Lady Catherine,
Dame Sybil and the grizzly bear.

July 2 – The Tower of London
So Much More
I always thought the Tower of London
Was just a tower where Elizabeth stayed
Before becoming the Virgin Queen
Although not a virgin at all
But I was mistaken
It seems as if the Tower of London
Is much more complex than I thought
Towers and castles and moats and more
With a history that traces back a millennium
I was surprised
I must have been sleeping in class
When we studied Jolly Ole England
But thanks to this poetry challenge
I’ve a new wrinkle on my brain
Thanks Walt

Unkindness of Ravens
The Monarchy depends on us
My brethren and me
Six guardians of the Tower
Legend says we must not leave
Wings are clipped
Servants prepare banquets
All needs are met
We are adored, pampered
We are beautiful
We long for the sky
To feel the wind ruffle our feathers
We are not free

We, The Ravens
We
used
to guard
the tower,
Morris and Marley,
brothers fed by Raven Master.
Our diet, and jobs as guardians was rote,
though we enjoyed overlooking the moat, a constant sense of guilt prevailed–we were stuck.
Warned by Raven Master, the tower would tumble if we left, one day we heard the song of a lark; it marked our departure to freedom.

The Boys Lost in the Tower
Old and used
the walls whisper
of deeds seen
and the shadows
of echoes
march up and down
the stairs.
Some see only
the crown jewels,
some see
the tears and blood
and hear the cries
and laughter
of those
lingering in residence.
